Supplements for Healthy Gums
It’s no surprise that your gums need just as much attention as your rest of the body does – after all, it takes the brunt of the force when chewing, brushing, and even sleeping. While many of us know the best nutrients to improve our muscles, skin, and hair, the best supplements for healthy gums are not quite as well known.
What causes gum damage?
There are a variety of factors that contribute to inflamed gums: bacteria, stress, lack of sleep, nutrient deficiency, excess sugar, alcohol, smoking, toxins and chemicals, and more. Because of the stressful and unhealthful lifestyles we carry out every day, a whole host of illnesses creep on our bodies. These coenzymes are found naturally in your body and are powerful antioxidants (more potent than vitamin C). These can be found easily as oil capsules, which are also absorbed more readily by your body.
2. Vitamin C
This vitamin is mentioned in nearly every “good supplements” list, and it can’t be forgotten in the list for supplements for healthy gums! As a powerful antioxidant, vitamin C can be found in a variety of plants, especially in citruses, berries, broccoli, and spinach. However, to reach the dosage of vitamin C needed to have an impact on your gums, taking a 1000mg to 3000mg vitamin C tablet is recommended.
Zinc has been known for treating colds, and its potency as a plaque deterrent is no different. Zinc aids your immune system, and therefore is helpful in combatting against a multitude of infections, including those of your gums. They can be found in meat, shellfish, and pumpkin seeds. Supplements of 15mg zinc is also recommended.
Found in nuts, vegetables, and fish, selenium is also an antioxidant that will help clear up inflammation caused by free radicals.
5. Aloe Vera
Although not traditionally considered a supplement, this potent plant has the potential to heal receding gums. Take 100mg daily while also rubbing some aloe gel on your gums to see improvements.
This is a blended medicine of Guggulu, Guduchi, amla, licorice, and others that support your immune system and thereby reduce inflammation of your gums. While this blend may not be familiar to you, a clinical study published by the Journal of Periodontal Implant Science shows that the dietary supplements of Spetilin helps with periodontal treatment. If this isn’t a supplement for healthy gums, then what is?
7. Omega-3 Fatty Acids
This supplement is also infamous for its various benefits throughout the body. Studies show that taking 300mg of omega-3 fatty acids daily leads to an improvement in various gum defects, including gingival index, pocket depth, and bleeding. It also helped with gum-to-tooth attachment, which is important, especially for those who experience receding gums. Another study by Journal of Dental Research finds that the omega-3 fatty acids may combat bone loss in advanced gum diseases. Additionally, they are helpful as anti-inflammatory agents. They can be easily supplemented through fish oil supplements.
8. Vitamin D and Calcium
Everyone is well acquainted with these two and their important role in skeletal formation. As such, the vitamin and calcium will help your teeth and ultimately your gums. They play a symbiotic role, with vitamin D boosting calcium absorption by the body, and the calcium allowing for healthy bones and teeth. Calcium is found in many dairy products, along with broccoli and salmon. Vitamin D can be made by your body when it is exposed to sunlight, but you can also ingest it through fatty fish, canned tuna, and Portobello mushrooms. Some products are fortified with vitamin D, which you can find in your local grocery store.
It’s important to remember that even if you specifically have gum disease, you must also take care of your teeth, for they affect each other. Healthy teeth lead to healthy gums, and healthy gums will support healthy teeth!
9. Vitamin A
Vitamin A is often used in skin products to boost skin cell production, leading to a more youthful appearance. As such, this vitamin plays an essential role in boosting your immune system to fight off infections and inflammations. As with all other vitamin types, they are easily found in fruits and vegetables, but supplements can be taken, if necessary.
This mineral is also crucial in increasing bone mineral density. It cooperates with magnesium to manage blood acidity levels, which in turn helps calcium fortify your bones and teeth. Bananas are well-known for containing high levels of this mineral, but many other fruits and vegetables, such as lima beans and tomatoes, also contain potassium.
Just like calcium and potassium, phosphorus helps build strong bones and teeth. You may not need to set out in a quest for phosphorus, because they’re found in so many foods, from seafood to vegetables. You can also find some in beef, pork, and cheese, so as long as you have a well-rounded diet, you will have enough phosphorus!
I have discussed a list of important supplements for healthy gums. Remember that a well-rounded diet is key to maintaining not only healthy gums, but also a healthy body. Focusing only on one supplement will most likely not serve you well in the long run. Eat lots of fresh foods and less of processed foods, and your gums will thank you for it!
